Sune’s IGA Market
Sune’s IGA Market started as Heinonen’s Store when my Great Grandparents, Hannah and Karl Heinonen resolved to help their Drummond Island neighbors get supplies more conveniently to this remote Island by opening a one-room store. Their only daughter, Hilka, and her husband, Sune Bucht, my Grandparents, later transformed Heinonen’s Store to Sune’s IGA Market. Their dedication to helping their neighbors is legendary. Grandpa Sune sometimes brought supplies across the frozen St. Mary River to winter-bound Islanders with Grandma Hilka’s beloved St. Bernard, Prince, hitched to a sled. Through the years, we Drummond Islanders, along with our family and Market have always depended on each other. We all grew up together.
Along comes those big box stores with their tempting low prices and a vast selection of items transported from around the globe. How can we, a small-town grocery store, hope to compete? It’s expensive to transport to such a remote place. It’s a constant struggle to find willing, suitable suppliers with the quality Drummond Islanders desire.
Time to pull up our bootstraps, dig out the dog sled, so to speak. Adapt, carry on. Sune’s IGA Market staff will aid you with custom ordered goods as well as with necessities. I can’t brag about my staff’s dedication enough. I know they’ll continue to give you their Drummond Island best. Because we know you value personal, basic, neighbor-to-neighbor, Drummond Island service. It’s what we do; support each other. I can’t promise to provide the lowest prices, but I can promise prices will stay as low as we can possibly manage. We don’t have the largest selection or the latest self-checkout technology. It just isn’t feasible. Right now, my husband, Dale Melvin (my high school sweetheart), and I aim to continue Grandpa Sune’s and Grandma Hilka’s legendary passion to serve Drummond Island. And our son, Zach, the fifth generation, is keeping his German Shepard, Zetterberg, in sled-ready shape. Just in case.
